“Iconic UK Shoe Retailer Robin Elt Closes Worcester Store”

Must Read

After 153 years in service, Robin Elt Shoes, one of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers, is closing its high street store in Worcester. The closure, scheduled for January 10, 2026, marks the end of an era for the establishment that first opened its doors in 1872. Despite the closure of the Worcester branch, Robin Elt Shoes will maintain its presence in other locations, including Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes.

Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure, attributing it to the store’s lack of financial viability for sustained operation. She acknowledged the challenging decision, stating, “It’s very difficult for myself, being the family business, it’s very sad to have to come to this decision. The shop is no longer viable as a store that can continue into the future, unfortunately. We can’t pick money out of thin air.”

Highlighting the broader retail landscape, a spokesperson for Worcester City Council noted the impact of online shopping on city centers and the shift towards town centers emphasizing leisure and entertainment activities. Worcester City Council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council and Worcester BID, has undertaken extensive efforts to support city center traders. The city boasts a unique shopping blend of prominent high street brands and independent retailers, with initiatives like the Independent Retailers Forum demonstrating support for this model.

Additionally, recent closures have affected Scope, a charity shop chain, which shuttered three high street branches over the weekend in Morden, Torquay, and Washington. These closures align with the charity’s plan to close 77 shops this year due to financial challenges. The closures, following a consultation initiated in January, are part of Scope’s strategy to address a projected £1.5 million loss. Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closures, emphasizing the impact on both staff and volunteers engaged in supporting disabled individuals and their families through the charity’s work.
