Henrik Stenson, the celebrated Ryder Cup champion, faces uncertainty in participating in certain DP World Tour events due to recent rule changes. Stenson, who incurred fines exceeding £1 million for affiliating with the breakaway group LIV Golf, may no longer have a guaranteed spot in tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the Scottish Open, as reported by The Telegraph.
Previously, elite golfers such as Stenson enjoyed exemptions for Rolex Series events based on their legendary status or ranking in the top four of the Tour’s career money list. However, they have been downgraded to Category 11a, diminishing their qualification prospects.
Stenson, currently seventh on the career money list with earnings exceeding £28 million, was reinstated to the tour after being ousted by LIV Golf and serving a two-month ban. Notably, this rule change also impacts other prominent golfers like Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Paul Casey.
Despite the potential exclusion from certain tournaments, there is a possibility for Stenson to secure invitations from sponsors or elite tournament selections. However, reports indicate that at least one LIV player was denied entry to the upcoming Desert Classic in January.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, who opted against joining the breakaway league, clinched victory at the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, securing the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth consecutive year. Reflecting on his achievement, McIlroy expressed pride in surpassing golf legend Seve Ballesteros and his aspirations to become the winningest European in terms of Order of Merits and season-long races.
