FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, has confirmed his intention to seek re-election, according to the global soccer governing body. Infantino has been under mounting scrutiny for his unsuccessful proposal to offload shares in the World Cup. Despite calls for his resignation, FIFA announced that Infantino will vie for a fourth and final term until 2031.
In response to widespread demands for his departure, UEFA, the governing body for European soccer, expressed a lack of trust in Infantino and previously threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. Several national associations, such as the English FA, have withdrawn their support for Infantino’s re-election bid.
Infantino declined to comment on his future plans during the opening of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. FIFA expressed regret for the missteps in its controversial attempt to sell World Cup profits through a commercial arm and pledged to prevent such errors in the future. However, the apologies have not alleviated the pressure on Infantino’s leadership position.
The deadline for candidates to enter the upcoming presidential race is November 18, precisely four months before the election. Infantino reiterated his decision to run for re-election, emphasizing that there will be an appropriate time and place to address the ongoing situation.
