“FCA Seeks Input on Car Finance Compensation Program”

Must Read

The financial regulator has provided an update for numerous drivers eagerly awaiting more information about a significant car finance compensation program. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is presently seeking input on the specifics of a compensation plan for individuals who were unfairly sold a car finance agreement between 2007 and 2024 due to inadequate disclosure of broker commissions.

Drivers might be entitled to compensation if their car finance contract included a discretionary commission arrangement (DCAs), where brokers and car dealers could boost interest rates on car loans to earn higher commissions. Other eligible car finance agreements may involve those with high commission arrangements or instances where a broker failed to disclose exclusive partnerships with certain lenders.

In a recent announcement, the FCA has instructed motor finance companies to expedite the handling of complaints by two months, moving the deadline for resolution from July 31, 2026, to May 31, 2026. Complaint processing had been halted since January 2024, but firms are urged to resume investigations promptly.

Over 14 million car finance agreements could be covered by the compensation scheme, anticipated to launch early next year. The FCA has estimated that most drivers could potentially receive around £700 in compensation. The regulator emphasized the importance of prompt complaint resolution, highlighting that complaints cannot be delayed indefinitely.

The FCA has discouraged drivers from engaging lawyers or claims management firms to file complaints, advising individuals to contact the lender directly for free complaint submission. Those who have already lodged complaints before the scheme’s implementation are likely to receive compensation sooner. Lenders may have to disburse an estimated £8.2 billion in compensation.

Renowned financial expert Martin Lewis has encouraged individuals to submit complaints promptly if they suspect eligibility for compensation. Lewis emphasized the importance of initiating the complaint process to ensure cases are evaluated, particularly for older cases where documentation may have been lost.
