Several top snooker players, including renowned names like Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have expressed their views on a rule they believe should be altered in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, elite snooker professionals were asked about the one regulation change they would advocate for, and a particular rule emerged as a common concern.
O’Sullivan, a seven-time world champion, and other players have called for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a contentious issue among top players. The current rule penalizes players if they fail to make contact with the designated ball during their shot attempt, leading to a foul and a miss call by the referee.
The ‘foul and a miss’ ruling is typically invoked when the referee deems that a player deliberately chose a more challenging shot instead of an easier escape from a snooker. It can also be enforced if a player underperforms and fails to make contact with a ball, indicating a lack of effort.
Under this rule, the opponent of the player committing the foul has the choice to either reset the balls for a retake or leave them as they are on the table. If repeated fouls occur, the player may find themselves continuously attempting the same shot while their opponent gains points without any effort.
Another controversial rule in snooker is the ‘three-miss rule,’ where a player conceding three consecutive misses on the designated ball automatically forfeits the frame to their opponent. Critics argue that this rule can lead to inconsistent enforcement, slow down gameplay, and confuse casual viewers.
When asked about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan emphasized his desire to amend the miss rule, suggesting a limit of three misses. Wilson echoed this sentiment, advocating for a restriction on the number of misses allowed.
Selby proposed a similar modification by limiting the number of misses to three, highlighting the unfair advantage gained by opponents due to multiple fouls. Murphy criticized the exploitable nature of the miss rule, stating that it enables players to strategically commit fouls, which he finds unfavorable.
Neil Robertson, currently ranked third in the world, suggested a reform where failing to make contact with a red ball results in a free ball for the opponent, aiming to expedite the pace of the game significantly.
Apart from the miss rule adjustments, players also scrutinized the traditional dress code in snooker competitions. The requirement for long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear has faced criticism from within the sport, with many advocating for a more relaxed approach to attire regulations.
Mark Allen emphasized the need to relax the strict dress code in snooker tournaments, while Luca Brecel highlighted the dress code, shot clock, and mandatory cushion contact as top areas for potential change in the sport.
