During a family vacation, Henry Barringer underwent a drastic personality change that left his wife struggling to recognize him. The 35-year-old became more sarcastic and blunt, exhibiting behavior completely out of character. After experiencing severe headaches and sickness, a CT scan in June 2023 revealed an inoperable and terminal brain tumor as the cause of his transformation.
Henry, a rugby enthusiast, commenced radiotherapy and chemotherapy while his parents, Linda and Robert, invested in sending a sample of his tumor to the US for alternative treatment options not available in the UK. Despite these efforts, Henry tragically passed away in May 2024, just 11 months after his diagnosis, leaving behind his wife Rebecca and their young son Edward. In honor of Henry, family and friends organized a charity rugby match to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research.
Rebecca, an architect from North Walsham, Norfolk, recalled noticing changes in Henry’s behavior a year before his diagnosis. She described the challenges of coping with his symptoms while caring for their son and trying to comprehend the impact of the brain tumor on their lives.
Despite the grim prognosis, Henry remained determined to fight his illness. Rebecca shared how his personality briefly returned to normal after treatment, instilling hope for the future. She emphasized the limitations of the NHS and the family’s decision to explore all possible avenues, including seeking treatment abroad. Henry’s resilience and unwavering spirit were evident as he continued working and attending a Rugby World Cup game shortly before his passing.
Rebecca highlighted the urgent need for increased research and funding for brain tumor treatments, noting the disparity compared to other types of cancer. She expressed hope that raising awareness about this issue would inspire action to support affected families.
In memory of Henry, his former colleagues at Oakbank, an environmental consultancy, planned to undertake the National Three Peaks Challenge to further contribute to Brain Tumour Research. The charity’s community development manager emphasized the need for innovative treatments and greater investment to improve outcomes for brain tumor patients. The ongoing fundraising efforts by Rebecca and Henry’s acquaintances were acknowledged as crucial for advancing research in this field.
