ITV’s frequent guest, Dr. Amir Khan, issued a crucial warning to the audience of Good Morning Britain (GMB) on Friday. The full-time NHS GP appeared on the show via videolink to address the topic of vitamin and mineral supplements.
This caution follows a discovery by Which? experts who found supplements with excessively high doses being sold on online platforms. The investigation focused on Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, and Zinc supplements available for purchase on popular websites. Dr. Amir Khan highlighted that certain online brands are marketing products with dangerously elevated levels of vitamins and minerals.
Dr. Khan emphasized the potential dangers of consuming excessive amounts of vitamins and minerals. For example, he explained that while Vitamin D supplementation is necessary during the months of October to April in the UK due to limited sunlight exposure, some brands are offering doses far exceeding the recommended levels. He warned viewers that excessive Vitamin D intake can lead to calcium-related issues affecting the kidneys and heart.
Furthermore, Dr. Khan pointed out the adverse effects of overdosing on vitamin A, vitamin B6, and zinc. Excessive vitamin A consumption can result in liver toxicity, too much vitamin B6 can impact nerve function, and an overload of zinc, commonly taken for colds, can interfere with iron absorption and lead to complications like anemia and disrupted copper absorption.
The doctor raised concerns about the lack of regulation in online and imported supplement brands, emphasizing that misleading labels and the social media trend of ‘megadosing’ pose serious health risks. He advised viewers to opt for reputable brands or obtain supplements from pharmacies, adhere to NHS-recommended doses or those prescribed by healthcare professionals, and consult with a community pharmacist if unsure about supplement intake.
