Clifford, a one-year-old mix of poodle and Cavalier King Charles spaniel, suddenly displayed signs of distress, including lethargy, pale gums and tongue, and vomiting. Vecchio became alarmed and suspected Clifford might have ingested something harmful while at Railtown Park near the High Level Bridge.
As Clifford’s condition deteriorated rapidly, Vecchio hurried to seek veterinary care by calling an Uber. During the ride, she anxiously ensured Clifford stayed awake, fearing he might lose consciousness. At the animal hospital, the veterinarian diagnosed Clifford with potential opioid toxicity and promptly administered naloxone, leading to his complete recovery.
Vecchio expressed understanding of the vet’s suspicion, noting the prevalence of public drug use in downtown Edmonton, which could endanger pets like Clifford. Dr. Jami Frederick, president of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, highlighted the increasing occurrence of opioid ingestion in pets, especially during summer when outdoor activities are more frequent. Frederick advised pet owners to carry naloxone kits and seek immediate veterinary assistance if opioid toxicity is suspected, as naloxone may require multiple doses for effective treatment.
The City of Edmonton, in response to the incident, emphasized periodic cleaning of park areas but could not confirm if the incident was formally reported. Vecchio vowed to be more cautious about choosing walking routes for Clifford to avoid areas with potential drug exposure risks. She emphasized the importance of closely monitoring Clifford’s surroundings and diet to ensure his safety and well-being.
