Thieves recently carried out a daring art theft at the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, according to the town’s mayor. The criminals managed to grab four valuable paintings, but two of them were dropped in the museum gardens as authorities responded to the alarms triggered during the incident early on Tuesday.
The stolen artworks are significant pieces by the renowned impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, known to have fetched substantial sums at auction. Mayor Bryan Masson expressed concern over the attack on the museum, highlighting the cultural and historical importance of the institution to the region.
The two recovered paintings, identified as “Madame Colonna Romano” and “Young Woman at the Well,” are part of the collection loaned to the Renoir Museum from Paris’s prestigious Musée d’Orsay. The mayor emphasized the irreplaceable value of Renoir’s works, stressing that such art cannot simply be sold off.
In addition to the retrieved pieces, the thieves made off with two other paintings, “Madame Pichon” and “Coco Reading,” before dropping them in the museum gardens as they fled from law enforcement. The Marseille prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the organized crime behind the theft.
The Renoir Museum, located on a hill near Nice where the artist passed away, houses a significant collection of Renoir’s masterpieces, sculptures, furniture, and photographs. This incident follows a pattern of escalating art thefts in Europe, with Europol noting a shift towards more violent and opportunistic thefts in recent times.
The French government faces mounting pressure to address security vulnerabilities in museums, as highlighted by a recent parliamentary report revealing deficiencies in resources and preparedness across cultural institutions. Mayor Masson, of the National Rally party, has called for enhanced security measures to protect the country’s artistic heritage from such criminal acts.
A survey conducted by the French Culture Ministry in 2024 indicated that many museums lack adequate emergency plans and surveillance systems, underscoring the need for improved security protocols. The theft at the Renoir Museum serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by cultural institutions in safeguarding valuable artworks.
