Originally scheduled for 8 p.m., the Jun. 20 concert was postponed to 9 p.m., but the performance actually kicked off around 10:45 p.m. Walia expressed disappointment not just in arriving home late but also in missing out on the full concert experience due to the delay.
This summer has seen several high-profile concerts causing delays, such as Jay-Z’s final show at Yankee Stadium in New York starting after midnight and Harry Styles delaying a show in Mexico City due to heavy rain. These incidents prompt fans to question what exactly a concert ticket guarantees.
Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl explained that consumers have limited rights when it comes to concert delays, typically only guaranteeing the seat and the show to some extent. The fine print often includes clauses allowing for changes in event dates and times without notice, leaving ticket holders with little recourse in case of delays.
Ashish Sharma, from the Consumers Council of Canada, emphasized the lack of statutory rights for concert delays, suggesting that consumers should be promptly informed of any major delays. The issue arises as consumers are spending more on live entertainment, with Live Nation reporting significant revenue growth in 2025.
Dahl suggested that consumers may have more leverage through public pressure than through ticket contracts when addressing concert delays. Walia, like many other fans, felt that some form of compensation, such as a rebate or credit towards future shows, should be provided in cases of significant delays.
