McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing frustration after a viral post on X platform revealed that the cost of a hash brown has surged to nearly £2 in certain McDonald’s outlets.
The post features an image of a McDonald’s menu board showing a price of £1.99 for a hash brown at the specific restaurant visited by the individual.
This post, which has garnered over 459,000 views, was accompanied by the comment: “£2 for a single hash brown. We’re officially calling it quits.”
In response, one person remarked: “It’s getting out of hand, I used to visit occasionally as it was always an affordable choice.” Another individual stated: “For that price, might as well go for the sausage sandwich.” A third person simply said: “Unbelievable.”
Another user added: “Those hash browns are the best thing they ever made. But £2 is just too much.” Someone else reminisced: “I remember when they were priced at 59p.”
A McDonald’s spokesperson mentioned: “A significant number of our restaurants are independently owned and operated, allowing them to set their own prices.
“As a result, prices for individual items can vary; however, all strive to offer customers a top-notch dining experience and good value for money.”
This development follows McDonald’s announcement of an upcoming increase in the points required for redeeming free items through the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program.
Currently, 5,500 points are needed for items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, 6,500 points will be required to exchange for any of these items. Customers earn 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
The required points for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries will increase from 1,500 to 2,000 points. The threshold for a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will rise from 2,500 points to 3,500, and for a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, the points needed will go up to 5,000 from 4,000 points.
A McDonald’s representative informed The Sun that the adjustments to the loyalty program are a response to escalating food and supply costs.
They added: “While we have raised the points needed across all tiers due to increasing food and supply expenses, we have also introduced several popular items available for redemption for the first time, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and the new Sausage Sandwich, offering more choices for our customers.”
