On weekends, Kevin Murison attracts various reactions as he performs his bagpipes on a bustling sidewalk in Ottawa. Despite a few individuals covering their ears as they pass by, the majority offer positive feedback, praising his music and attire. Murison, 35, often dons full Highland dress while busking near the Ottawa Locks, close to the Château Laurier.
An incident last year involved a Brazilian tourist who was deeply moved by Murison’s performance, leading her to embrace him and share her contact details for a potential visit to South America. Conversely, another individual demanded Murison to cease playing, resulting in a violent act where the assailant threw a drink at him and stole money from his open pipe case.
However, a recent Saturday afternoon brought a more alarming situation for Murison. While playing at his usual spot, a stranger approached him under the pretense of taking a photo but then brandished a knife unexpectedly. Following a blur of events, Murison discovered a severe cut on his thumb and bagpipe bag, requiring four stitches.
Fortunately, a bystander alerted the authorities, leading to a swift police response. The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was swiftly apprehended near the scene. Facing multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and probation violations, the assailant remained in custody.
Despite the unprovoked attack, Murison remains passionate about his bagpipe music, which he adopted around 15 years ago. Alongside busking, he participates in Highland games and parades with his band, Ottawa Caledonian Pipes and Drums. The bagpiping community has rallied around Murison, offering support and resources following the incident.
Although recovering from his injuries, Murison is determined to resume playing once he heals. Despite the setback, he remains resolute, asserting that the attack will not deter him from pursuing his passion for bagpipe music.
