Italian authorities are on the lookout for a mysterious Bulgarian woman in connection with the killing of British student Meredith Kercher. Kercher, a 21-year-old student from the University of Leeds, was murdered in 2007 while studying in Umbria. The case gained global attention when American citizen Amanda Knox and her Italian boyfriend were initially convicted for the murder before being acquitted by Italy’s highest court.
Another student, Rudy Guede, was later sentenced to 30 years in prison for Kercher’s murder in 2008, with his sentence reduced on appeal. Guede was released early in 2021 for good behavior and is now facing trial for a separate rape case.
After 18 years since Kercher’s tragic death, prosecutors are now seeking a Bulgarian woman who left Italy shortly after the murder. Retired prosecutor Giuliano Mignini revealed that a reliable source provided a new lead in the case, identifying a potential suspect who was in the vicinity at the time of the crime.
Mignini stated, “Recently there have been developments that could prove significant. A source I consider reliable gave me the name of an individual I’d never considered before. A person who may be implicated in the murder and who fled abroad a few days after the crime.” Authorities clarified that the individual could be a witness rather than a suspect in the case.
Francesco Maresca, the lawyer representing the Kercher family, expressed their desire for more information following these latest revelations. In a statement, Maresca emphasized the need to remember Meredith’s life and legacy in a dignified manner.
In a separate development, the Kercher family criticized Amanda Knox for allegedly exploiting their daughter’s murder for publicity in her Disney+ series, despite being acquitted a decade ago. The family urged for a focus on remembering Meredith’s life and not sensationalizing the case further.
