Atari, known for its classic games from the 1980s, is embracing its roots by teaming up with Activision to reintroduce 39 vintage games on physical cartridges. This announcement was made at the recent Gamescom event in Germany. The re-released games include popular titles like Pitfall, River Raid, and Megamania.
These games can be enjoyed on the Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original 2600 console that first hit the market in 1977. The updated console supports wireless joysticks and can be connected to modern TVs via HDMI.
Launched in 2023, the 2600+ also supports original cartridges from the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles. The newly released versions are backward compatible, allowing them to be played on the original consoles if they are still functional.
Mike Mika, the studio head at Digital Eclipse, a subsidiary of Atari, noted the enduring appeal of these classic games. He highlighted the significance of the collaboration with Activision, as it marks a reunion after more than four decades. Activision, founded in 1979 by former Atari programmers, is now part of Microsoft and known for popular franchises like Call of Duty and Candy Crush Saga.
Atari has undergone various ownership changes over the years but has recently focused on reviving its brand in the gaming market. The company split in 2021, with a renewed emphasis on gaming under American investor Wade Rosen’s leadership. Atari has acquired studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse and introduced new hardware like the Atari 2600+ console.
The company’s efforts to reconnect with retro Atari fans have included collaborations with original artists and the release of compilations like Atari 50. The recreation of fabric patches from the Activision games is a nod to the past, offering players a nostalgic experience.
While physical game releases are considered niche in today’s digital age, Atari’s dedication to preserving the original gaming experience on cartridges may appeal to those seeking a tangible connection to gaming history. This focus on physical media comes at a time when other companies are shifting towards digital-only releases, prompting a renewed interest in classic gaming formats.
