With only 60 days left, Albertans are preparing to address 10 critical questions that could significantly impact the direction of the province. While nine questions focus on immigration and constitutional reform, the 10th question, regarding whether Alberta should remain in Canada or proceed with a second binding referendum on separation, is gaining momentum in town halls and rallies.
As the countdown continues, both sides are working diligently to sway public opinion. Longtime pollster Janet Brown notes a consistent trend over the past eight years, with support for separatism trailing behind those favoring unity in Canada. She emphasizes the importance of voter turnout for both camps as the referendum nears.
Various groups are actively engaging in the debate, each with distinct strategies. “Let Alberta Decide,” a pro-independence group, acknowledges the challenges ahead and is planning a major rally before the referendum. They are focusing on mobilizing support, especially in urban areas where backing for independence is weaker.
“Forever Canadian,” an organization promoting unity, is conducting grassroots campaigns across Alberta and distributing campaign materials. They prioritize boosting Canadian pride and plan to continue their efforts in the lead-up to the referendum.
The “Alberta Prosperity Project/Stay Free Alberta” group, which spearheaded a citizen initiative petition for an Alberta separation vote, is gearing up for the final push before the referendum. Their strategy includes maximizing advance polls and hosting town halls to encourage voter participation.
“Alberta’s Voice,” led by Decide Campaigns’ president Stephen Carter, aims to counter separatist narratives with advertising campaigns in key regions. They are focused on undecided voters and mobilizing support to secure a significant majority in favor of staying in Canada.
As the referendum approaches, efforts to engage voters intensify. Elections Alberta’s provision for mail-in voting adds another dimension to the electoral process, with special ballot packages needing to be submitted before the deadline on October 16.
