A woman who endured a vicious attack by her abusive ex-partner, suffering 29 stab wounds and seeking refuge with a knife still embedded in her chest, expressed a sense of relief upon learning of his death in prison.
Steven Wood’s attempt to fatally harm Martina Turner, also known as Tina, occurred in May 2021. Despite the harrowing ordeal, Tina managed to escape and call for help while concealing herself in a cupboard. Prompt emergency response led to her rescue and Wood’s subsequent arrest, resulting in his 12-year imprisonment.
Wood, incarcerated at HMP Frankland, recently passed away, as reported by Chronicle Live. Tina, aged 57, revealed her feelings regarding his demise, stating it brought a significant relief. She highlighted the perpetual fear victims of domestic violence face even after their abuser is incarcerated, emphasizing that the trauma lingers.
Following the brutal incident, Wood fled the scene, necessitating emergency personnel to break into the premises to aid Tina. She received medical treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary for injuries to her heart, spine, and legs. Wood, found near the Redheugh Bridge, was also hospitalized after a suicide attempt.
Enduring multiple surgeries during a six-week hospital stay, Tina continues to grapple with both physical and psychological repercussions of the assault. Wood, having pleaded guilty to attempted murder, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years.
Despite Wood’s imprisonment, Tina remains apprehensive for her safety, haunted by his threat to “finish her off.” She expressed ongoing anxiety about his potential release and the impact on her wellbeing and that of others. Wood’s death in custody on September 17 has alleviated some of Tina’s fears, knowing he can no longer pose a threat to women in the future.
An investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding Wood’s death. The Prison Service confirmed his passing at HMP Frankland, emphasizing the standard procedure for investigating all deaths in custody.
