Sky Sports host Jo Wilson has shared her experience battling cancer, expressing her initial fear of death and the emotional preparation for the worst upon receiving the diagnosis. Diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2022 following a routine smear test, the 41-year-old underwent a challenging journey as the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, necessitating six weeks of treatment before she was given the all-clear in June 2023.
Having joined Sky Sports in 2011, Wilson underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy to combat the cancer. While these treatments saved her life, they induced early menopause, significantly impacting her career as a presenter.
Wilson’s cancer revelation came shortly after the birth of her daughter in 2020. In a Sky Sports News documentary titled “Football, Cancer, and Me,” she shared the fear and reluctance to burden others with her situation, reflecting on the importance of seeking medical attention if something feels amiss.
The documentary also features conversations with colleagues Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray, who have faced their own battles with cancer. Mowbray disclosed his bowel cancer diagnosis, while Saunders underwent surgery due to a brain infection following a thyroid cancer diagnosis, leaving a visible scar.
Through these personal accounts, Wilson aims to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of early detection. The documentary sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals dealing with cancer and emphasizes the significance of seeking medical help promptly.
