“Drivers Miss Out on Savings as Fuel Prices Remain Stable”

Must Read

Fuel prices for drivers have remained relatively stable despite a significant drop in wholesale costs, as reported by the AA. The group highlighted that the wholesale price of petrol has decreased to levels last observed in 2021 before the onset of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, leading to a subsequent price surge. This decline coincided with oil prices reaching their lowest point since May, dipping below $60 per barrel in anticipation of a potential peace agreement between the two nations. Projections indicate an oversupply of oil in the market next year.

Despite garages experiencing a decrease of over 7p per liter in petrol costs towards the end of November, the savings have not been reflected at the pump for drivers. The national average petrol price stood at 137.3p per liter on Monday, barely budging from the start of December at 137.5p. The AA estimated that if all wholesale savings had been passed on to consumers, drivers could have saved approximately £4.60 when filling a standard 55-liter tank.

Similar to petrol, diesel prices have seen a minimal reduction on forecourts compared to wholesale costs. The average diesel pump price dropped by just a third of a penny from 146.9p per liter at the beginning of December to 146.6p on Monday. These findings arrive as millions of motorists prepare for the holiday exodus during Christmas, potentially missing out on significant savings at the pump.

The AA expressed uncertainty over the delay in passing on wholesale savings to consumers, refraining from direct criticism towards retailers. Luke Bosdet, the AA’s spokesperson on fuel prices, remarked on the stagnation of pump prices in December, indicating a missed opportunity for reductions. This issue follows a prior alert by the UK’s competition watchdog regarding elevated fuel price margins by retailers, suggesting possible consumer exploitation.

Gordon Balmer, executive director at the Petrol Retailers Association, emphasized the ongoing translation of wholesale fuel price decreases to pump prices ahead of the festive season. The industry faces additional scrutiny as the Competition and Markets Authority is set to release its latest examination of fuel prices and profit margins, potentially intensifying pressure on retailers.
