Lorenzo Musetti has experienced a tense week but has achieved his goal of securing a spot at the ATP Finals. Initially on track to qualify, a premature exit at the Paris Masters allowed Felix Auger-Aliassime to edge past him in the Race to Turin.
Musetti headed to the ATP 250 event in Athens fully aware that his performance would determine his fate. Winning the tournament would secure his place at the ATP Finals, while anything less would grant Auger-Aliassime the final spot.
Despite falling to Novak Djokovic in the Athens final, Musetti’s qualification was assured after Djokovic withdrew from the year-end Finals. Following a swift turnaround, Musetti swiftly made his way to Turin for the ATP Finals, where he is set to face Taylor Fritz on Monday.
Expressing his excitement on social media, the 23-year-old described the achievement as a dream come true. Musetti shared a photo of himself and his team en route to Italy.
Although aiming for his third career title, Musetti faced disappointment in the Hellenic Championship final. Despite the loss, he was visibly elated when Djokovic revealed the news of his withdrawal after their match.
Arriving in Turin, Musetti supported Djokovic’s decision to delay his withdrawal announcement. Acknowledging the unique circumstances, Musetti and Djokovic shared a light-hearted moment after the match.
Djokovic’s late withdrawal prompted the ATP to swiftly find a replacement alternate. With Musetti securing Djokovic’s slot, Alexander Bublik moved up to first alternate. Casper Ruud, the next in line, was called in as the second alternate and was spotted watching Carlos Alcaraz’s match on Sunday.
Both Bublik and Ruud, as alternates, stand to earn £118k without playing a match. Their fees will increase if they are called upon to compete.
