Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood fell short of the £1.1 million top prize at the Abu Dhabi Championship, where Aaron Rai emerged victorious in a thrilling play-off. The tournament marked the first of the DP World Tour Play-off events, signaling the culmination of the Race to Dubai.
European Ryder Cup stars showcased their skills at Yas Links, with Fleetwood narrowly missing out in the play-off and McIlroy securing a joint third-place finish. The Abu Dhabi Championship, designated as a Play-off event, saw the prize money significantly increased, with nearly £7 million up for grabs.
Fleetwood claimed just over £750,000 in winnings, while McIlroy shared a purse of £752,000 with Nicolai Højgaard for the third and fourth positions. Despite starting the final round six shots behind Rai, McIlroy’s impressive round of 62 propelled him back into contention but fell short of victory.
Following a thrilling finish, McIlroy finished at 24 under, leading to a tie between Fleetwood and Rai at 25 under after sinking crucial putts on the 17th hole. A play-off was triggered when Rai missed a birdie opportunity. In the play-off, Rai clinched the title with a birdie putt, while Fleetwood narrowly missed his attempt.
Reflecting on his victory, Rai expressed his elation and gratitude towards his fellow competitor, Tommy Fleetwood. Rai credited his caddie for helping him stay focused during crucial moments, including a pivotal up and down on the 15th hole, which boosted his confidence for the final stretch.
The Race to Dubai will conclude with the DP World Tour Championship commencing on November 13.
