A woman from the UK was discovered in a shallow grave in Florida after reportedly expressing a desire for a violent death to a man she met on a fetish website. Sonia Exelby, 32, from Portsmouth, had flown to the US seeking individuals willing to kill her violently, as stated in a Florida police affidavit.
Her remains were located in woodland in Marion Oaks, Florida, shortly after she missed her return flight on October 13. An autopsy determined that she succumbed to four stab wounds.
Dwain Hall, 53, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and kidnapping charges, which he denies. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. Authorities claim that Hall and Sonia began interacting on a fetish website, with the arrest file indicating that Sonia had suicidal intentions and traveled to the US to potentially endure sexual abuse, torture, and murder.
Allegedly, Hall picked Sonia up from Gainesville Regional Airport upon her arrival from the UK and took her to an Airbnb in Reddick, Marion County, which she had booked using her credit card before her US arrival. Before her visit, Hall reportedly purchased gun cleaner, rope, and a shovel from a nearby supermarket.
Concerns arose when a friend of Sonia’s alerted her Instagram followers about Sonia’s vulnerable state while in the US. The friend mentioned Sonia’s mental health struggles and the risky situation she had put herself in.
An affidavit revealed that Hall initially denied knowing Sonia but later confessed to driving her to an Airbnb where a video showed Sonia with visible bruises. In the video, Sonia expressed self-deprecating thoughts and a desire to be harmed.
During police interrogation, Hall admitted to discussing bondage, suicide, and Sonia’s wish for someone to end her life. He was taken into custody after attempting to use Sonia’s credit cards post her death. Hall’s defense lawyer has entered a not guilty plea, and the case is awaiting further legal proceedings.
Authorities emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards such violent crimes, ensuring full accountability for perpetrators. The Foreign Office confirmed its assistance to Sonia’s family and collaboration with Florida authorities in the ongoing investigation.
