“UKHSA Urges Mask Use as Colder Weather Brings Rise in Illnesses”

Must Read

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is advising individuals to consider wearing face masks as the colder weather sets in and various illnesses become more common. During autumn and winter, flu, Covid, the common cold, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) tend to be more widespread.

Symptoms of these illnesses can overlap, with some being more severe than others. In a recent post on Twitter, the UKHSA shared a checklist to help prevent the spread of infections for individuals and their families.

To prevent infections from spreading in the upcoming weeks and months, people are encouraged to follow five key steps: wash hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, stay home if feeling unwell, ventilate indoor spaces by opening windows, and consider wearing a mask when going out.

According to the latest government data, there has been a slight increase in Covid cases by 1.9% in the week ending October 8. Covid-related deaths also rose by nearly 15% during the week ending October 3, from 87 to 100.

In the week ending September 30, the number of Covid patients admitted to healthcare facilities rose from 1,894 to 2,077, marking a 9.7% increase.
