A massive gathering of over 2,000 lively dachshunds took place at a renowned beach during a popular annual event in Southwold, Suffolk. This gathering has evolved into a prominent international meet-up for dog enthusiasts, attracting participants from various countries worldwide. The event, known as the Sausage Stroll, has earned recognition as the world’s largest assembly of a single dog breed.
Dressed in creative costumes, attendees paraded from the harbor to the pier, showcasing their dachshunds adorned in hot dog-style coats. Some dedicated owners even traveled from distant locations such as the United States to partake in the festivities. The parade was led by a towering 7-foot dachshund-clad organizer, with beach hut owners along the promenade providing water bowls for the thirsty pups.
Initially conceived in 2017 by Laura Baggott, the event has witnessed exponential growth, culminating in a record-breaking attendance of 2,238 dachshunds in 2022. Laura expressed astonishment at the overwhelming turnout, noting the challenge of tallying the numerous four-legged participants. The event also served a charitable purpose, with donations solicited for the Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD organization.
Despite facing potential cancellation due to regulatory requirements in the past, last year’s event was ultimately approved by East Suffolk Council, much to the delight of the dedicated sausage dog community. The organization aims to support dachshunds afflicted with Intervertebral Disc Disease by providing essential mobility aids and equipment.
