Leaders in the Falkland Islands have issued a stern warning to Nigel Farage following a statement by a Reform MP that did not rule out the possibility of sending asylum seekers to the islands.
According to the Falkland Islands Assembly, Mr. Farage’s party has misunderstood the islands’ right to self-governance. This response came after Sarah Pochin, a key figure in Mr. Farage’s party, indicated the potential deportation of migrants to the Falklands if their party assumes power.
The Falkland Islands Assembly emphasized that the territory is a self-governing British Overseas Territory with authority over its domestic affairs, including immigration. They clarified that any decisions regarding the islands must involve their consent, respecting their constitutional status and right to self-determination.
During a recent debate in Westminster Hall, MP Ms. Pochin did not rule out the possibility of sending asylum seekers to various British Overseas territories, including the Falklands and Gibraltar. However, Gibraltar has already stated its opposition to such a plan, asserting that immigration policy falls under its jurisdiction and rejecting processing asylum seekers on its soil.
While Mr. Farage has pledged to deport a significant number of individuals in a specified timeframe, the destination and cost of such deportations remain unclear.
In response to calls to categorically rule out sending asylum seekers to the Falklands and other overseas territories, Ms. Pochin declined to do so, stating that she would not exclude any potential policies and declining further questioning.
The Falkland Islands assembly reiterated their stance on self-determination and welcomed engagement from UK parties or MPs seeking to understand the islands, its people, and governance system.
Following Ms. Pochin’s refusal to rule out the use of the Falklands for asylum processing, Labour MP Kevin Bonavia expressed concern over the potential use of the islands, which were fiercely defended against Argentinian invasions in 1982, for dispersing asylum seekers.
