Prince Edward Island’s corn season is now making up for a slow start caused by a chilly spring, coinciding with the arrival of competitively priced corn from Quebec in supermarkets. Matthew Compton, the owner of Compton’s Farm Market in Summerside, noted that the colder-than-usual weather in May and June delayed the sweet corn harvest due to corn’s preference for warm soil and temperatures to thrive. To expedite the growth of some of his crop, Compton strategically planted a portion under biodegradable plastic, creating a greenhouse effect that accelerated germination and growth. Despite some early sales success, Compton mentioned that his main corn crop is slightly lagging, which could affect demand, especially during the peak midsummer season when tourists flock to the island.
In a similar vein, Mark Verleun of Keddy’s Corn in Montague also faced challenges from the cold and wet spring. However, favorable weather in July has improved the situation, with hopes to kick off the season soon and sustain it until early October, depending on the frost. Both farmers are closely monitoring the corn surplus in Quebec, where an overabundance of corn has led to reduced prices, impacting local markets in Prince Edward Island. This influx of cheaper Quebec corn has the potential to undercut local prices, although Compton and Verleun have maintained their prices stable in response.
While the availability of cheaper corn from Quebec may sway some consumers, both farmers emphasized the importance of supporting local producers and investing in the community by paying slightly more for locally grown corn. This support not only contributes to the local economy but also ensures the sustainability of the agricultural sector on Prince Edward Island.
