A deluge in Japan caused significant disruptions in Tokyo, leaving thousands stranded at Narita airport due to record rainfall. The intense downpour led to floods in Chiba prefecture, resulting in transport disturbances, power outages affecting 20,000 households, and claiming the lives of eight individuals.
Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai described the situation as highly uncommon, emphasizing the severity of the event. Among the casualties was a person trapped in a submerged vehicle, as reported by Chiba authorities and police. At the airport, stranded passengers received assistance with essentials like sleeping bags, water, and snacks, following the chaos caused by the travel disruptions.
Despite the challenges, airport officials anticipated normal flight operations the following day. The extensive rainfall, measuring over 360 millimetres in certain areas within a 24-hour span, exceeded previous records, leading to widespread consequences such as power outages and road closures.
The aftermath saw over 20,000 homes losing power, gas supply interruptions for nearly 13,000 residences, and temporary shelters set up for affected residents in Chiba city. Road closures and suspended rail services added to the transportation woes, forcing drivers to seek alternative routes. However, some train services between Narita and Tokyo resumed to alleviate congestion at the airport, a crucial international travel hub.
The weather authorities noted that the unprecedented 367 millimetres of rainfall in Chiba surpassed the previous record set in 2013, underscoring the severity of the situation. Despite the challenges faced, efforts were underway to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
