“Man Charged with Synagogue Vandalism in Saskatoon”

Must Read

A 31-year-old man from Dundurn, Saskatchewan, is facing mischief charges in connection with an incident of vandalism at a synagogue in Saskatoon, as reported by city police. The vandalism occurred during a prayer service at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue on August 1. The man is accused of throwing eggs at various vehicles and parts of the building.

After the release of a surveillance camera image of the suspect, public tips aided in identifying him. The man voluntarily turned himself in to the police headquarters on Thursday, following which he was released on conditions pending his first court appearance.

Although the Saskatoon police hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation, the suspect is not facing hate crime charges. Superintendent James Oliver clarified in a statement that while “hate crime” is a broad term in Canada, it is not a specific charge under the Criminal Code. However, any indication that an offense was motivated by bias or prejudice can be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.

The Criminal Code does have a provision that addresses hate-motivated mischief against religious structures, including synagogues. A police spokesperson mentioned that the charges were based on the available evidence at the time and could be revised by the prosecution if new evidence comes to light.

Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concern about the vandalism occurring during daylight hours but also emphasized the need for trust in the safety of the Jewish community in Saskatoon. Statistics Canada data indicates that in 2024, 70% of police-reported hate crimes against religious groups targeted the Jewish community.
