The free school meals program is undergoing a significant change to widen the eligibility criteria and support over 500,000 children, particularly affecting families on Universal Credit in England.
Families on Universal Credit will now qualify for free school meals, potentially saving up to £500 annually following this expansion, effective from the upcoming academic year starting in September 2026.
Currently, all children in England receive free school meals until the end of Year 2. However, eligibility beyond this point is based on the family’s income, requiring it to be below £7,400 per year after benefits.
In a recent announcement, Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed that starting September 2026, all children in households receiving Universal Credit will be eligible for free lunches. The government’s objective is to extend free school meal benefits to disadvantaged students in maintained schools, academies, and free schools nationwide by expanding the eligibility criteria.
Approximately 500,000 more children will now meet the requirements for free meals due to this change. Current beneficiaries will remain eligible until the conclusion of the 2025/2026 academic year.
To apply, students must have their eligibility verified by their school or local council. Detailed guidance will be provided before the policy adjustments come into effect next September.
Currently, families on Universal Credit earning less than £616.67 in their latest assessment period automatically qualify for free school meals, while those surpassing this threshold will have their income evaluated over two assessment periods not exceeding £1,233.34.
Special provisions enable local councils to offer support to children where in-school assistance may not be suitable. This support is usually integrated into the child’s education, health, and care plan, with adjustments made for children with specific dietary needs.
Local authorities can provide various forms of assistance, including distributing food vouchers to parents to prepare tailored packed lunches for their children.
