A shooting incident at Kentucky State University has resulted in the death of a student and critical injuries to another. The alleged perpetrator, Jacod Lee Bard, has been charged with murder following the tragic event that took place on the university’s campus in Frankfort on December 9.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old De’Jon Fox from Indianapolis, lost his life in the shooting, while a second student remains in critical condition. The authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the attack but have clarified that it was an isolated incident.
Bard, a resident of Evansville, Indiana, faces charges of murder and first-degree assault. The university police reported that the shooting followed a confrontation, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect.
There have been circulating videos raising speculation about a potential fight involving Bard’s son prior to the incident or his visit to the campus to discuss his children’s safety with the school administration. However, Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy declined to comment on these rumors.
During a news conference, Tracy mentioned, “It’s really too early in the investigation right now to really give any details that led up to it. A lot of it would be speculation.”
The shooting occurred at Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall, marking the second shooting incident at the university’s dormitories within four months. The first incident, back in August, involved two non-students as victims, with one sustaining minor injuries and the other serious ones. The dormitory and a vehicle were damaged in the shooting.
Following the previous shooting, University President Koffi C. Akakpo mentioned that additional police officers were deployed, and a reassessment of security measures will be conducted after the ongoing investigation into the recent incident is completed.
Kentucky State University, a public historically Black university with around 2,200 students, is where the tragic incident unfolded. Bard is receiving legal representation from a public defender at the Franklin County Department of Public Advocacy, which has refrained from commenting on the case at this time.
