Wilkinson condemned the immediate spread of speculation and discriminatory comments on social platforms after such attacks, pointing fingers at certain hard-right political figures, including members of the Reform Party, for exploiting the situation. Mahmood expressed dismay at the spread of misinformation on social media, emphasizing the need for factual accuracy during crises.
The Home Secretary commended the rapid response and bravery of emergency services, train personnel, and passengers who intervened during the attack. She highlighted the courageous actions of a crew member who confronted the assailant, sustaining injuries in the process but preventing further harm.
Anthony Williams faced charges of attempted murder, assault causing bodily harm, and possession of a bladed weapon in connection with the train stabbings. A LNER staff member remained hospitalized in critical condition, along with four other victims. Williams also faced charges related to a separate incident at Pontoon Dock DLR station.
Williams was remanded into custody to await trial at Cambridge Crown Court. The attack unfolded shortly after the train departed Peterborough station, prompting passengers to trigger emergency alarms and divert the train to Huntingdon.
