The Canadian government is allocating close to $130 million for infrastructure improvements at Parks Canada locations throughout Cape Breton Island to address deteriorating infrastructure and repair damage caused by severe weather events in recent years. Some funding has already been utilized, with ongoing projects in progress.
During a recent announcement in Baddeck, Patrick Boucher, Parks Canada’s vice-president of real property and assets, highlighted the reconstruction efforts on the Cabot Trail, a renowned scenic highway in Canada. The focus is on enhancing its durability to withstand the escalating frequency and intensity of weather challenges. Additionally, work is underway at the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site to maintain the A-frame building’s integrity by replacing aging structural elements and windows.
Renovations are actively taking place at various national historic sites, including St. Peters Canal, the Fortress of Louisbourg, and the Canso Islands site near Isle Madame. Notably, repairs are being carried out at the Cape Breton Highlands National Park to replace roads, bridges, and trails impacted by adverse weather conditions and to revitalize aging structures like the Glebe House in Ingonish.
Jaime Battiste, the Liberal MP for Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish, emphasized the significance of preserving and enhancing park infrastructure due to its historical importance to Canada, local communities, and the tourism sector, as well as for cultural heritage preservation.
Terry Smith, CEO of Destination Cape Breton, expressed appreciation for the funding, stressing the need for reinvestment in tourism offerings to meet rising visitor expectations. The restoration projects aim to ensure that these sites remain safe, accessible, and inviting to all visitors.
