Trump’s endorsement came following criticisms from UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF regarding Infantino’s handling of a proposed sale of World Cup commercial rights. The organizations accused Infantino of breaching trust through deceptive actions and called for an independent investigation into the matter.
The football community has been in upheaval over Infantino’s failed proposal to sell a portion of the World Cup commercial rights. The plan, which involved Thrive Capital linked to Joshua Kushner, faced backlash and subsequent abandonment. UEFA, supported by AFC and CONCACAF, threatened boycotts of FIFA events unless assurances were made against similar future schemes.
Despite the backlash, Infantino received backing from some federations, including CAF, Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Bolivia. However, there have been calls for Infantino’s resignation, with Norwegian Football Federation President Lise Klaveness among those urging him to step down.
