Tirana witnessed a massive gathering of students on Wednesday as they protested against the increasing education expenses and corruption, resulting in the setting ablaze of the Education Ministry building and two banks. The demonstrators also clashed with police, throwing stones and causing havoc in the city streets, prompting law enforcement to respond with water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The scenes of chaos included overturned garbage cans, vandalized local businesses, and fires raging in the vicinity. The unrest, now spanning two consecutive days, marked a significant escalation in the students’ discontent over the state of education and governance in Albania.
The protests in Tirana mirrored a broader trend of student activism across Europe, with similar movements in France highlighting demands for more teachers and improved educational infrastructure. The deteriorating school conditions and overcrowded classrooms have been central issues driving the protests in both countries.
The ongoing turmoil in Albania represents a notable challenge to Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration, as anti-corruption sentiments continue to grow among the populace. Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçi emphasized on social media the importance of peaceful protest, condemning violence and destruction as counterproductive to the cause.
Student organizers articulated their grievances, focusing on university conditions, soaring tuition fees, financial aid inadequacies, and post-graduation employment uncertainties as key areas of concern driving the protests. The demonstrations have not only underscored the students’ dissatisfaction but also shed light on the wider societal issues plaguing Albania’s education system.
