Survey Reveals Reluctance to Administer CPR to Women

Must Read

An unsettling study has brought to light the reluctance of one in three individuals to administer CPR to women, citing concerns about touching a woman’s chest. Additionally, 33% of men express apprehension about being perceived as engaging in inappropriate behavior while performing chest compressions.

These findings, from a survey conducted by St John Ambulance involving 1,000 adults in the UK, underscore a concerning hesitance to provide life-saving assistance to women in need.

St John Ambulance has emphasized that this apprehension, driven by sexual taboos, poses a significant risk to women experiencing cardiac arrest. The charity asserts that everyone, regardless of gender, should receive CPR when necessary, emphasizing the uniformity of care across sexes.

Despite being in 2025, the charity has had to reiterate that “Every body is the same,” stressing the importance of equal access to CPR. Previous studies have shown a discrepancy in the likelihood of women receiving bystander CPR compared to men.

In response to these findings, St John Ambulance is urging the public to learn CPR and advocating for equal treatment in administering the life-saving technique. The charity questions why women should be denied a chance at survival just because of anatomical differences.

The survey also revealed a reluctance among men to use a defibrillator, with concerns about placing pads on a woman’s bare chest area leading to discomfort. Notably, nearly half of male respondents expressed discomfort about potentially having to remove a woman’s clothing, including a bra, to use a defibrillator.

Highlighting the significance of timely intervention, the use of a defibrillator within the first three minutes of a cardiac arrest can significantly enhance survival rates by up to 70%.

Addressing the need for change, the survey underscores the importance of overcoming societal taboos and misconceptions that hinder life-saving efforts. It emphasizes the necessity of prompt and equal access to CPR for all individuals in need, regardless of gender.
