KL Hockey in Kawartha Lakes, known for its summer programs for kids, is committed to providing top-notch experiences both on and off the ice. However, the camp faced scrutiny this summer due to the involvement of one of its lead instructors, Bradley Gibbs, a Durham Regional Police officer who recently pleaded guilty to assaulting children. Gibbs, described as a coach and mentor in the region, decided to step down from his role following inquiries from CBC News.
The camp informed parents that they had supported Gibbs during a personal legal issue but did not disclose whether they were aware of his guilty pleas. Currently, there is no Ontario law mandating background checks for summer camp staff. However, following public concern, Premier Doug Ford’s office announced plans to make criminal background checks compulsory for summer camps.
While the Ontario Camps Association requires member camps to vet staff with criminal record checks, membership is voluntary. KL Hockey Camp, not a member of the OCA, is not bound by these standards. Gibbs, still employed by Durham Regional Police, has been reassigned pending the outcome of his legal proceedings.
Experts highlight the gap in legislation governing summer camps and emphasize the importance of vetting staff who work with children. Despite the absence of mandated requirements, camps are urged to prioritize safety by conducting thorough background checks. Parents are advised to inquire about staff vetting procedures at the camps their children attend to ensure a secure environment.
