Pregnant defendant Bella Culley, accused of drug smuggling, is seeking release from prison before her delivery, as disclosed by reports. Despite reaching a plea agreement for a two-year incarceration, Culley, set to give birth in December, awaits formal sentencing for alleged drug trafficking from Thailand to Georgia.
In a courtroom session in Tbilisi, it was revealed that Culley’s family, including her parents who contributed £138,000 to the court, has financially intervened. The location and terms of her imprisonment remain uncertain, with possibilities ranging from continued detention in a female penitentiary near Tbilisi to house arrest or extradition to the UK for serving her term.
Nevertheless, it has been disclosed that Culley’s legal team is considering a petition for a presidential pardon, which could result in her prompt departure from Georgia. In the event of an unsuccessful pardon attempt, sources indicate the possibility of Culley being granted parole before childbirth due to her pregnancy and exemplary conduct while in custody.
Should both freedom initiatives fail, reports suggest that Culley will be transferred to a nearby hospital for childbirth before being allowed to raise her child under custodial care in a specially designated room. During a recent court appearance, Culley, clad in a grey sleeveless cardigan and pink t-shirt with a new hairstyle, displayed a range of emotions upon hearing details of the plea deal.
Notably, Culley’s legal representative had previously indicated that the fine paid would influence the duration of her sentence, hinting at the potential nullification of jail time based on financial contributions. Following the court session, Culley’s mother expressed disappointment at the higher sum demanded by the court for her daughter’s release, suggesting that the original figure was considerably lower.
The prosecutor confirmed the acceptance of the plea agreement, stating that all conditions had been satisfied. Meanwhile, Culley’s lawyer affirmed the agreement’s finalization and requested a concluding hearing for the issuance of the verdict. Despite a plea for bail before the sentencing hearing, the judge denied the request citing insufficient legal grounds for altering Culley’s custody status.
In a poignant moment during the proceedings, Culley inquired about the possibility of caring for her child while in jail, to which her lawyer reassured her. Originating from Billingham, Teesside, Culley’s mysterious journey from Thailand to Georgia culminated in her arrest for drug trafficking, allegedly under duress from criminal elements.
Maintaining her innocence, Culley has recounted being coerced into the illicit activities through threats and torture. Assuring the public of Culley’s well-being and the progress of her pregnancy, her lawyer emphasized her ability to bond with her child post-delivery.
