“Ottawa Councilor Pushes to Rename Trump Avenue”

Must Read

Amid escalating trade tensions between Donald Trump and Canada, an Ottawa city councilor has proposed renaming a street honoring the U.S. president. Previous attempts in 2021 to rename Trump Avenue faced community division, but Councilor Riley Brockington now insists on removing the name due to Trump’s threats to Canada’s sovereignty and economy.

Brockington plans to collaborate with Trump Avenue residents to initiate the renaming process post the upcoming election, emphasizing the urgency given the perceived harm caused by Trump’s policies. The Central Park neighborhood, known for its New York City-themed street names like Staten Way and Grammercy Park, may soon bid farewell to Trump Avenue.

During a discussion led by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe on supporting Ottawa businesses affected by Trump’s tariffs on Canadian exports, the proposal to rename Trump Avenue surfaced. While Sutcliffe acknowledged potential inconveniences for residents in changing their addresses, he firmly expressed his opposition to any homage to Trump in Ottawa.

Residents of Trump Avenue echoed the sentiment that the street’s name should be changed, citing Trump’s strained relations with Canada. Rana Usman emphasized that Trump’s actions do not merit commemoration in Canada, while John Germano called for removing any association with Trump from Ottawa, suggesting imposing tariffs on such entities.

While some residents support the renaming, others like Doug Gimmer argue that the name ‘Trump’ aligns with the area’s New York theme and suggest focusing efforts on different community issues. The debate continues as the community weighs the significance of renaming Trump Avenue in light of changing political dynamics.
