“Nursery School Teacher Convicted of Murder and Rape”

Must Read

An atrocious incident unfolded when a nursery school teacher committed a heinous act by raping her partner’s 4-year-old daughter and causing her death by drowning. The perpetrator, Amber Lee Hughes, carried out this despicable act on January 23, 2023, while entrusted with the care of Nada-Jane Chalita by her father, Elie.

Prior to the tragic events, Hughes, feeling abandoned by Elie, expressed her anger through messages hinting at retribution for what she perceived as betrayal. She callously stated, “You broke my heart; I’m going to burn yours. How could you do that to me?”

Subsequently, Hughes placed Nada-Jane in the bathtub and sat on her until she drowned. The autopsy revealed that Nada-Jane had also been sexually assaulted twice before her untimely demise.

During the trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes admitted to suffering from a borderline personality disorder but acknowledged her awareness of her actions on the day of the incident. She blamed the confrontation with Elie about his alleged infidelity as the catalyst for her actions.

While attempting to justify her actions by citing her troubled childhood and mental health issues, Hughes faced sentencing on October 27. Despite expressing remorse and regret, the court deemed her actions as deliberate and premeditated.

Hughes had entered into a relationship with Elie in 2021, leading to a tumultuous living situation with threats directed at Nada-Jane. She was convicted in August of premeditated murder and rape, offenses that carry a mandatory life sentence. Elie, devastated by the loss of his daughter, expressed that no punishment could ever suffice for the pain he endures.

In light of the heartbreaking tragedy, Elie lamented, “The justice that I seek doesn’t exist in this realm or in this lifetime.”
