Both Granter and Morgan expressed support for the government’s initiative to amend the Highway Traffic Act to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters. Granter proposed the implementation of safety courses for children before they are allowed to operate these modes of transportation, urging municipalities and the province to enforce rules. On the other hand, Morgan suggested a program with a road test requirement for users to carry a pass while riding these vehicles.
To gather public input, an online survey is accessible on engagenl.ca, inquiring about safety measures like age restrictions, helmet usage, education, and operational rules. The survey also addresses topics such as the minimum age for operating these devices, permitted locations for usage (on or off sidewalks), and speed limits. The province is accepting written submissions via email or mail to the Department of Government Services, aiming to introduce regulatory changes to the House of Assembly in the upcoming fall session.
A recent survey conducted by the Canadian Pediatric Society highlighted the dangers associated with e-scooter crashes, documenting fatalities, ICU admissions, and injuries, with head injuries being the most common. Organizations like Parachute Canada recommend that children under 16 should not operate these vehicles, emphasizing the serious nature of these motorized devices.
