In the past decade, fans thoroughly enjoyed Matthew Perry’s portrayal of Chandler Bing on the long-running series “Friends.” However, his passing in 2023 brought to light his ketamine addiction, which posed a challenge for many who had fond memories of the sitcom character. To offer a more comprehensive understanding of the actor, Netflix has announced a three-part documentary series titled “The One About Matthew Perry.”
The documentary will delve into Perry’s evolution from a budding comedy star to his iconic role on the popular NBC show. Netflix revealed that the series will feature never-before-heard accounts from Perry’s inner circle, including close friends and his sister Mia Perry Bowick, a grief specialist who has openly discussed her journey following his death.
Bowick expressed in a statement that it took time for her to be ready to share her experiences and reveal the complexities of loving Matthew beyond his on-screen persona as Chandler and his struggles with addiction. Perry tragically passed away at 54 from a ketamine overdose in his home’s hot tub.
Several individuals have pleaded guilty to offenses related to supplying Perry with the drug, with Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who sold the ketamine, currently appealing a 30-month prison sentence. The documentary will not only highlight the fond memories of those close to Perry but also provide insights into his private battles, aiming to honor his legacy of openness and advocacy.
The highly anticipated docuseries is scheduled to premiere on October 27.
