The massive ice, rock, and sediment blast descended 1.2 km from a height of 5,000 meters, temporarily blocking the river and forming a lake upon release of water. Subsequently, the dam breached, leading to a destructive flood that hit downstream villages, causing devastation and casualties.
The aftermath of the initial disaster has led to the formation of additional lakes, posing a continuous threat of further calamities. The death toll has risen to at least 579 people, with numerous others still missing, including 32 Canadian citizens and residents in Nepal.
