Mother demands accountability after daughter’s tragic death

Must Read

A mother in mourning demands accountability following the tragic death of her four-year-old daughter while under the care of Child and Family Services. The incident occurred in Long Plain First Nation, prompting Manitoba First Nations Police Service to respond to the home where the child was found injured and in distress. Sadly, the four-year-old passed away, and her two younger sisters, aged one and two, were hospitalized, one in critical condition.

The grieving mother described her deceased daughter as a precious angel who adored her siblings and had a passion for singing and dancing. The family’s identity is protected by CBC to safeguard the privacy of the surviving children in CFS custody. The case has been transferred to RCMP Major Crimes Services due to the severity of the situation, although no charges have been filed yet.

The children were under the supervision of Waywayseecapo CFS, part of the Southern First Nations Network of Care authority. The agency has refrained from commenting on the tragedy. Manitoba’s Families Minister has initiated an internal investigation into the incident and has engaged the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth for further inquiry.

In the midst of her grief, the mother expressed concerns about her children’s well-being during their time in care, citing instances of physical indicators that she reported to CFS authorities. The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing support services for families in need. Long Plain Chief David Meeches and Chief Murray Clearsky extended their condolences and emphasized the importance of a thorough and unbiased investigative process.

The heartbroken mother shared her efforts to regain custody of her children through rehabilitation and parenting programs, only to face the devastating reality of losing one child and seeing the others suffer. She speaks out to prevent similar tragedies and calls for accountability and reform in the child welfare system to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
