The trial involving two women accused of harassing the family of missing Madeleine McCann heard testimonies today from a couple who are friends of the family. David and Fiona Payne were in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007 and provided evidence against Julia Wandelt and Karen Spragg. Wandelt allegedly made phone calls to Mr. Payne, claiming to be Madeleine and asking for contact with Kate and Gerry. Mr. Payne found the calls distressing, as Wandelt persisted in her belief of being Madeleine and urged him to clear their names.
Fiona Payne, a long-time friend of the McCanns, also testified about Wandelt’s claims and messages. She mentioned Kate’s distress over the situation and her own interaction with Wandelt through Facebook Messenger, where Wandelt requested DNA comparisons. The court was informed that Wandelt is accused of stalking the McCanns, attending their home, and sending various forms of communication. Spragg faces similar charges, with the alleged offenses occurring between June 2022 and February 2025.
