Preston Manning is taking a lead role in an upcoming public forum addressing Western Canada’s historical issues with the federal government in preparation for Alberta’s impending fall referendum. The virtual sessions, scheduled for September 19 and 20, will be jointly chaired by Manning, the former leader of the Reform Party, and former British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell.
The forum coincides with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plan to present 10 questions to voters on October 19, one of which pertains to the province’s continued participation in Canada or the possibility of a second referendum on separation. Manning emphasized that the forum’s focus is on education and voter engagement, aiming to avoid partisan disputes common in such gatherings.
Manning highlighted the distinct approach of this event compared to past initiatives like the Alberta Next panel led by Smith and the previous Fair Deal panel he was part of, noting that this forum aims for a more inclusive discussion. The forum’s objective is to present various perspectives without favoring any particular stance.
Furthermore, the forum’s discussions will not be limited to Alberta alone. A subsequent session is planned for October to formulate recommendations following the referendum, with the intention to share these suggestions with policymakers across Western Canada. Manning emphasized that concerns regarding federal government involvement extend beyond Alberta, making the forum’s outcomes relevant to other provinces.
The forum intends to promote a democratic process devoid of political discord, with a goal of showcasing the possibility of reviving faith in democratic institutions, particularly among disenchanted youth. Manning also expressed the aim of shedding light on the additional nine ballot questions proposed by Smith, which include initiatives such as restricting social services for certain immigrants and advocating for constitutional discussions on Senate abolition and provincial appointment of superior court judges.
Smith has positioned these proposals as a potential compromise to address Alberta’s grievances with Ottawa while affirming her commitment to Alberta’s continued membership in Canada. Manning believes that a positive vote on these proposals will embolden provinces to further explore shared federal-provincial jurisdiction matters, such as immigration policies.
