As the cold and flu season peaks, he highlighted the importance of this simple yet effective solution.

Colds are more common in the UK during autumn and winter, with about 80% of cases occurring during the cold and flu season from September to March. The colder months encourage people to spend more time indoors, facilitating the spread of viruses. Typical cold symptoms include a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, hoarse voice, and fatigue.

Rhinovirus is a primary cause of colds, thriving in cold, dry environments with low humidity. The lack of sunlight in winter can lead to reduced vitamin D levels, weakening the immune system and making individuals more susceptible to illnesses. While there is no cure for the common cold, resting, staying hydrated, and managing symptoms can aid the body in recovery, as the virus typically runs its course in seven to 10 days.

Contrary to common belief, Dr Khan suggests that zinc, not vitamin C, may be more effective in reducing the duration of a cold. He emphasizes that zinc has shown more evidence of efficacy compared to vitamin C, which is often promoted as a go-to supplement for colds. Zinc supplements are readily available at various health stores like Holland and Barrett, Superdrug, and Boots, with prices as low as 5p per pill.

Research indicates that zinc supplements, particularly in lozenge form, may slightly shorten the duration of a cold, with an average reduction of one to two days. To experience the benefits of zinc, adults should aim for at least 75 mg of elemental zinc daily, preferably in the form of zinc acetate or zinc gluconate lozenges. It is recommended to start taking zinc within 24 hours of cold symptoms appearing, allowing the lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth and coat the throat and nasal passages with zinc ions to combat the virus directly.

Before incorporating zinc supplements into your routine, it is vital to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you are on specific medications or have existing health conditions. Some individuals, such as those with digestive issues, low copper levels, or pregnant and breastfeeding women, should exercise caution or avoid high doses of zinc. Seeking professional advice before taking zinc supplements is crucial for optimal health management.
