The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of certain Whole Foods Market brand products due to their connection to a salmonella outbreak in the United States. The recall includes various guacamoles, pico de gallos, salsas, and prepared foods that were distributed in Ontario stores and online. Although no illnesses related to these products have been reported in Canada, individuals who suspect they may have fallen ill after consuming a recalled item are advised to seek medical advice.
The CFIA’s recall is linked to the investigation conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) into salmonella cases associated with jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. The FDA has reported over 300 cases of illness in the U.S., with 36 hospitalizations but no deaths recorded.
A spokesperson from the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed that they are actively monitoring salmonella outbreaks, with no current investigations into cases linked to the U.S. outbreak. Additionally, the CFIA stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the products involved in the outbreak were distributed in Canada.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes salmonellosis, an infection of the intestinal tract. Ingesting food or water contaminated with salmonella bacteria is the most common way people contract salmonella infections. The CFIA warns that contaminated food may not show any signs of spoilage but can still cause illness. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. While most individuals recover within a week, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe infections.
Symptoms typically appear between six hours and six days after exposure, with the illness lasting for about four to seven days. It is important to note that contaminated food may not necessarily exhibit any visual or olfactory indications of spoilage, emphasizing the need for caution when consuming potentially affected products.
