Consumers who made purchases on Amazon in March are being alerted to a new deceptive scheme falsely claiming a “product recall” has been initiated. The concerning text message, which is being sent to mobile phones in the UK, starts with a notification stating, “Amazon Product Recall Notice.”
The message then proceeds to promise a full refund to recipients and encourages them to click on a link to log in to their Amazon account. It further emphasizes the urgency by instructing individuals to immediately stop using the product.
The message, as reviewed by Mirror Online, states, “Dear Customer, we are writing to inform you of a product recall affecting an item from your March 2026 order due to a design defect that may pose a potential safety risk.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your prompt attention to this important safety matter. Thank you for your continued trust in Amazon.”
Although the communication may sound alarming, there is no actual product recall. The message is a phishing scam designed to deceive concerned customers into divulging their login credentials, which could lead to detrimental outcomes.
Individuals who click on the provided link are directed to a counterfeit Amazon sign-in page that appears authentic. Once login details are entered, scammers can steal the information, potentially making unauthorized purchases, locking victims out of their accounts, or accessing personal data.
While this scam is relatively new and has only recently started appearing on phones, it is not the first time Amazon customers have been targeted. In a similar incident in February, cybercriminals circulated messages claiming a product had been recalled “for safety reasons,” linking recipients to a fraudulent Amazon page.
In response to inquiries from Which?, Amazon stated, “There are various scams that prompt individuals to make payments via email, phone, or text for products or services.
“Exercise caution whenever someone pressures you to act urgently—scammers often create a sense of urgency to manipulate individuals, using convincing tactics to lure consumers in.
“We encourage consumers to report suspected scams to safeguard their accounts and enable law enforcement to address malicious actors.”
Amazon also recommends customers to be vigilant of:
• Unfamiliar phone numbers or texts from numbers with unusual or foreign country codes
• Notifications regarding orders or deliveries that were not anticipated
• Links with spelling errors, unusual formatting, or URLs containing IP addresses instead of standard web addresses
