“New Council Tax Bands Target Wealthy Homeowners”

Must Read

Rachel Reeves is reportedly contemplating introducing new higher council tax bands aimed at wealthy homeowners. With the Budget just weeks away, the Chancellor is looking to target the richest property owners to address financial gaps left by the previous government.

While final decisions are pending, Reeves has hinted at increased taxes for the affluent as part of the upcoming Budget on November 26. Sources close to her have indicated a focus on taxing high-end homes, with discussions revolving around the implementation details.

In addition to the proposed council tax adjustments, a potential “mansion tax” may also be unveiled, involving capital gains tax on the sale of luxury properties. Reeves has indicated the need for wealthier individuals to contribute more due to the economic impact of Brexit and austerity measures.

The current council tax system in England is based on property bands, ranging from band A for lower-value properties to band H for higher-value ones. The idea of introducing new bands for England’s priciest properties was initially considered by former Conservative Chancellor George Osborne in 2012.

Ruth Curtice from the Resolution Foundation think-tank suggested the possibility of a supercharged council tax for high-value properties as a means to tax wealth more effectively. While this measure alone may not solve all property tax issues, it could ensure that the wealthy contribute proportionately more.
