“Manhattan S4-R Set-Top Box Offers Sky Q-Style Features Sans Monthly Fees”

Must Read

A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos for homeowners seeking a Sky Q-style upgrade without monthly fees. Launched recently, this device offers similar features to Sky’s premium service, such as recording programs, pausing live TV, and storing content on its internal hard drive.

One notable difference is the cost structure. In contrast to Sky Q’s subscription model, the Manhattan S4-R grants access to over 100 channels without ongoing payments. Once purchased, users do not incur any additional expenses.

Operating on the Freesat platform, the S4-R utilizes an existing satellite dish to deliver a range of free TV channels directly to the television. Notable channels available include BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.

The device boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search functionalities, and access to over 60,000 hours of on-demand entertainment. Supported apps encompass BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.

While it may not offer the premium sports and movie packages of Sky Q, Freesat stands out for its cost-free viewing experience.

The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently on the market at £219.99 through retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions set to launch soon. Demand is high, as indicated by Argos listing the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

Manhattan’s Chief Operating Officer, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, expressed the company’s aim to deliver a subscription-free experience akin to their T4-R Freeview recorder for Freesat users. He highlighted the S4-R’s enhanced recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit.

Positioned as an attractive alternative for households seeking a more budget-friendly and flexible TV service, the S4-R competes with traditional TV providers. A new player, the Pleio puck, also introduces a disruptive element by offering Freely streaming access to TVs without requiring an aerial, delivering over 50 live channels via the internet.

After initial stock challenges, the Pleio puck is now available for £99.99, including a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games, through outlets like Amazon and eBay.

Sky recently announced a 20% price reduction ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with the Sky Glass Air TV starting at £4.50 per month. Customers desiring the advanced Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, will need to pay from £11 per month.
