“Parents Urged to Get Kids Flu Shots During Half-Term”

Must Read

NHS England has issued a call for parents to ensure their children receive a flu vaccination during the upcoming half-term break due to a surge in infections. Various temporary vaccination centers are being set up at locations such as fire stations, bowling alleys, libraries, and football grounds.

While many students may have already been vaccinated at school, there are still opportunities available for those who may have missed out. This alert follows warnings from health officials about an early flu season and the importance of vaccination for protection.

In the Midlands region, multiple fire station clinics are scheduled across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent in the coming weeks, including one in Longton this Saturday. Additionally, a mobile flu van will visit a fire station in Lancashire and south Cumbria during the half-term break.

GP practices are offering flu vaccines to school-age children with specific health conditions, as well as two and three-year-olds. Parents can also take their preschool children to pharmacies for vaccinations, as confirmed by NHS England.

Duncan Burton, England’s chief nursing officer, expressed concern over the early flu season, emphasizing the significance of vaccination to prevent serious illness in children. He urged parents to explore vaccination options for their children promptly, either through school programs or local community clinics during the half-term period.

NHS England reported that more than 10 million flu vaccinations have already been administered, including to nearly 1.5 million school-age children and over 300,000 eligible two and three-year-olds. Flu jabs are also available for individuals aged 65 and above, at-risk under-65s, care home residents and staff, expectant mothers, close contacts of immunocompromised individuals, frontline healthcare workers, and children.

In the North West, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital has introduced “flu fairies” to administer flu jabs to young patients, while many flu clinics can be found at www.schoolvaccination.uk.

Ruth Goss, a senior cardiac nurse with the British Heart Foundation, highlighted the increased risk of severe illness from the flu for individuals with heart and circulatory conditions. She emphasized the quick and essential protection provided by a flu jab, which not only safeguards against health complications but also supports the NHS by reducing the strain on healthcare facilities during the busy winter season.

The UK Health Security Agency outlined twelve main groups eligible for flu vaccinations this year, with six becoming eligible from September 1 and the remaining six from October 1. Eligibility can be checked using the NHS app for individuals registered with a GP in England or the Isle of Man, with vaccinations available at various healthcare facilities.
